Please Learn to (at least kinda sorta) Type
Several people have inquired lately if I have a program to teach people how to use
a computer keyboard.
I'd really like to create one and I intend to do just that --- as soon as I figure out how!
It certainly would be a most worthwhile program to create as
many of the adult students and seniors that I have taught how to use a computer have lacked
basic typing skills.
I was especially inspired to create a computer keyboarding program when a gentleman who was applying for a job as a school teacher
expressed surprise that the letter keys were not in alphabetical order.
I feel especially bad when I see adults who are searching for jobs (sometimes
desperately so) slowly "hunt and peck" as they are typing a resume or filling out an
online job application.
Unfortunately my public library does not wish to offer a class in computer keyboarding.
As an alternative, I often encourage adult students in my classes to check out a library book on "How to Type" and
then practice the exercises in that book on a computer keyboard.
At the beginning of each of my computer classes I make it a point too emphasize to my students that
learning to (at least kinda sorta) type will make their computer experiences much
more productive and enjoyable.
I always stress to my adult students who are searching for jobs that learning how
to type is practically essential to getting a job that involves using a computer.
"Please believe me that the 'hunt and peck' method will not impress a prospective
employer."
Many adult students have said that they were "too old" to learn how to type or that
basic typing skills would be too hard to learn.
To counter this, I will show the adult student the first typing exercise in a typing
book and then have the student perform that exercise on a computer keyboard.
Not only does this tend to give adult learners some confidence in their abilities
to learn how to type but they often find the experience to be an enjoyable one.
